T&P 2B Research

This article goes on about how to create spot colour easily in editing programs.

This photographers work shows different ways in which they have created a spot colour effect in their image effectively. I believe it works well in most of the images and is interesting as it draws your eyes to the coloured section of the image before you look at the whole image.

This is another photographers selection of images where they have used selective colour, mostly with the colour red in their images. My favourite out of the images shown has to be Sanctuary in the wilderness II because I thinks the most well for this image as its centeral where as Sanctuary in the wilderness draws your eyes to the right hand side of the image and I feel its very distracting from the whole image over all.

This is another photographer who has chosen to use selective colour in their images, I think it works well for their images as it adds something to them for example their photo of Elmo next a bin, before that image might not have looked as interesting but because of the contrast between the black and white of whole image combined with the bright red of Elmo it makes you look at it differently.  I also really like their image of the woman in the bright coloured dress as it really makes her stand out from her surroundings, its also interesting why they have chosen to have her in colour yet have the other performer in black and white.

This website shows you different ways in which you can use a reflector to create types of lighting in your images and shows how holding it differently and the type of reflector you use will effect how your images look. It also covers the basics about reflectors such as what they do and when they should be used.

This article talks about how you can use tiles for product photography and shows examples of how different tiles will give your images a different look and feel. I will probably look into getting some some I can try out some product photography during the break to build my portfolio.

This link leads you to a page where it talks about the colour star and how you go about mixing colours and what the mixed colours will result in.

green and red = yellow

yellow and cyan = green

green and blue = cyan.

It also talks about which colours will neutralize each other (complementary colours) and what happens when colours are neutralized. The results are grays or blacks and is called neutral density.

yellow  is  complementary  to  blue

magenta  is  complementary  to  green

cyan is complementary to red.

This article looks into colour theory and what it actually means. It talks about how before we even pick up a camera we should have an understanding about colour and how they influence our perception of the world. The example they use on their page is good because its true, the orange image does appear more welcoming and warm compared to the cold blue image. Colour theory itself is based around the existence of three colours which when mixed together produce all other colours. The colours are known as the primary colours. It also goes on to talk about light and how sir isaac newton demonstrated that daylight can be split into a series of colours.

This article includes a range of minimal movie posters. Some are better than others as I’m able to recognise which movie they’re supposed to be, others are more difficult, the texts helps with some but with quite a few the text isn’t really necessary.

I found this tumblr account which had a lot of images of minimalist posters which inspired me with my images and gave my ideas about how I could go about representing the movies I chose to do.

Final images

These are my chosen final images.

I like how these images all have hints to which movie they’re trying to get across without giving away too much information about the movies themselves.

DSC_0004edut copy

With this image In tried to create a very typical looking snow white image. I like how this image turned out mostly because of the apple and how bright it is in the center of the image it draws your eyes directly too it before you are able to take in the rest of the image. I also like how pale my subjects skin looks in this image much like the characters complexion in the Disney movie. If I was to re-do the image I might have added pink to her cheeks to add the light blush the character had in the films.

This image is based on the movie Black Swan, in some of the images for the movie the main characters eyes look fully black with a red iris so I felt like I should replicate this in my own images but change the make up. I felt that doing a swan as the make up instead of that what can be seen in the movie, the swan make up design is mostly based on a minimal poster design I found based on the movie.  I like how working in black and white has really made the red of the iris stand out.

This image is based on the movie clockwork orange, when I was doing research on this I came across an image of a cartoon with only one eye on show with a thick black cog-like shape around it and a bowler hat. I want to create something similar in my photography but also include another detail such as the braces. I made the eye black to be like the cartoon eye, I was thinking about making the eye look like a clock but I felt like that might be too much. The background is orange like in the cartoon image just to help get across the orange from the title of the movie. I like this design because of how well the black and white works with the bright orange background.

I’m unsure if this image works well with the others as my entire subject is in colour where as in the other images only parts of my subject have been in colour. I like this image because of how well my my edit to the lightsaber has come out and how the subject is encased in darkness with only the one area of light on them. If I wanted to show they had some light in them I would have used a colour layer and drawn over an area of my subject in blue. The lightsaber I have used should indicate that this image is about the newest star wars movie: The Force Awakens as it is Kylo Ren’s saber. As you can see in the below gif image the lighting on kylos face is mostly red with a slight white-blue tint, some people believe that this indicates that he still has some light in him.

This might be the hardest one for people to get which movie I was trying to get across. This image is based on the posters for Rocky Horror Picture Show. If I could do this image again I would have made sure my subject had more room so I could have the legs further apart and would have had them bite their lip to replicate that which is seen on the movie posters originally. I first thought about adding text to the image but I feel that would have taken away from the simplistic image I was trying to achieve.

I like how this image turned out mostly because of how much your eyes are drawn to the points I have left in colour. I chose the tape and headphones to be in colour as I felt they were important to the character Star-Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy. He is one of the main characters from the movie and I thought using these props would be my best bet to get people to know which movie I was aiming to get across. I still feel that if I left the jacket in colour it would have been too much and it wouldn’t really achieve the look I was going for.

Guardians of the Galaxy poster

To create the below image I cropped down the original image to make it portrait instead of landscape like the image was originally. I duplicated the image and moved it on top of the original image and converted it to black and white, I then duplicated the original image again and then increased the saturation. The pattern from the shirt was coming through to try and remove the pattern I used the patch tool. To bring out the colour on the black and white top layer I erased the sections on the image where I wanted the colour to come through. I chose the tape and the orange padding on the headphones to be the sections in colour because I felt like they would be the key props on the image. I hoped that they would lead people to automatically to know which movie it would be as they were quite key things to Peter Quills (Star-Lord) character. I felt that I left the jacket in colour it would have been too much and I wanted the tape to be the main focus of the image.

Medium format Cameras

For this module we had to do some work using a Medium format camera, I borrowed a zenza Bronica sq-ai.

The below videos were very helpful when it came to loading the film and was a refresher course for the controls.

I decided to take my images at the canal. The medium format camera doesn’t have a function to help you take light readings so I took my Nikon camera to take readings so I knew what settings to use for my images. At first I forgot to take out the metal plate but once I figured out I needed to remove it, the rest of the shoot went fine after that.

Rocky Horror Picture Show

To create the bellow image I reduced the saturation and increased the lightness of the image. The lips were cut out and the saturation was boosted and shading was added before being placed at the bottom of the image.  I chose to go for this design after looking at images from the original show. If I had more space when I was shooting I would have probably have had my subject stand further apart so it could be similar to that which can be seen on the posters for the movies originally.

Pen tool

image for pentool cutout

We were given the task to cut out this toy gun using the pen tool on photoshop.

This was my first time cutting out using the pen tool, I don’t think it went to bad considering, there’s still a little bit white around the outside of the blue.

I then moved what I already cut out over onto a new canvas and then used the pen tool once more to cut out what was left around the trigger and changed the background to a bright colour so I was able to notice areas I had left white around.

BA Photo 20093

The above image is the original, I cut out the chair using pen tool and placed on a white background, without the shadowing under the chair it appears like it is floating.

For this image I used the gradient tool to create the background and used a diamon shape tool below the layer which the chair is on to create a shadow and lowered the opacity. After that I used gaussian blur to make the shadows edges look so sharp.

Star Wars: force awakens

Out of the images I took I settled on these two images on being my favourite out of the lot.

To make the lightsaber look more like the ones seen in the movie instead of just a glowing tube of light I added a red glow around the outside using the brush tool in photoshop. I used to brush to go over the top of the lightsaber and then used gaussian blur and duplicated the layer after lowering the fill % of the layers. I then used the eraser tool on the red which was on top of the lightsaber.

The image bellow is the image I have chosen as my final image from this set. I like the lighting on my subject as it really allows you to see the patterns on the fabric the subject is wearing. The way that the image drops off into the background is also another thing I like about this image, it gives the feel that my subject has just emerged from the darkness.

This article was really interesting to read as it talked about location spotting and how a model should prep for a shoot such as doing research on their characters poses and how they shouldn’t pose and how to create interesting images.

This website has a lot information on cosplay photographers and features different photographers and their work, it allows you to get a look at how their styles vary event though its very much the same kind of subject they are photographing.

This article shows one case where someone cosplayed a character of colour and faced backlash because of it and got accused of whitewashing the character even though her skin colour was a natural tan but they looked over her cosplays where she had lightened her skin for characters. I personally don’t think there is anything wrong with people altering their skin colour for cosplays as most of the time they mean no harm and are doing it to replicate the character as accurately as they can.

This article looks into if altering skin colour in cosplay is racism or not and look into different cases where people have altered their skin colour.

This article is from a black female point of view talking about her experience cosplaying and how people have responded to her cosplays.
