Studio Practice 2B Test shoots

Character: Mikasa Ackerman

Anime/Manga: Attack on Titan

Mikasa Ackerman (ミカサ・アッカーマン Mikasa Akkāman?, also spelled as Mikasa Ackermann in the FUNimation dub of theanime) is the adoptive sister of Eren Yeager, and the main female protagonist of the series.

After her biological parents were murdered by human traffickers, she was rescued by Eren and lived with him and his mother and father for approximately a year before the fall of Wall Maria.

Though she desires only to live a peaceful life with Eren, Mikasa chose to follow him into the military — where she is considered the best soldier among the 104th Trainees Squad — and later into theSurvey Corps. (source)

Personality:

A few years before joining the Yeager family, Mikasa appeared to be a cheerful, outgoing, yet unusually perceptive child. From an early age, Mikasa was aware of the harshness of nature, witnessing the manner in which predators would hunt and kill weaker prey. However, her innocence allowed her to push these thoughts to the back of her mind, and she continued to live happily with her parents. This illusory peace was shattered when a band of criminals brutally murdered her parents before her eyes in a failed kidnapping attempt on herself and her mother. To save herself and her rescuer, Eren Yeager, Mikasa managed to abandon all inhibition and hesitation, allowing her to kill one of her assailants.Following this traumatic event, Mikasa would gain a generally cynical outlook on life and accept the world as a cruel place where only those who are strong are able to survive. (Source)

This is the original image. This image was captured on my Nikon D3200 with my Nikon AF-S 50mm 1.8 lens.

original image

1/160 sec f/3.5 ISO 800

The below image shows the comparison of the original image and what has been edited. The image appears a lot brighter and the subjects face is a lot clearer in the edited image, the eyes look brighter too and more defined. My artist has edited the skirt, gear and swords on to the image and added appropriate shading so they look realistic.

side by side comparison 1

In the below image you can see how far the original image has been taken. Smoke has been added to the foreground and a Titan can be spotted hiding in a gap between the trees, blood was also added to the blades. The blood shows that she has killed quite a few titans during the time Mikasa has been outside the walls.

Example from the Anime of Mikasa killing a titan (inside the walls)

The photo appears a lot brighter than the original image, the blades seem to be positioned perfectly in the subjects hands and look pretty realistic considering they weren’t in the original image to begin with.

1/200 sec f/3.5 ISO 800 (Flash was used)

I have edited my subjects eyes to be grey like the character rather than the purple colour the contact lenses already were. The subject is posed doing a salute as it one of the poses the characters are well known for doing. The wall in the background is my way or interpreting the walls from in the show/ the buildings they have in the show as it fits well.

“In the manga Attack on Titan the members of the armed forces (and sometimes civilians in a show of respect towards military) salute by bending their arms and placing their clenched fist over their hearts. The gesture, known as “offering hearts” is meant to demonstrate that the soldiers are willing to give their bodies and lives to protect humanity and to ensure its survival.” (source)
